Hans saves Belgium’s honour in duathlon worlds with the AG world title and 11th overall position!

The ITU/Powerman world championships duathlon is a race that’s very close to our hearts, a race in which our athletes in the last 7 years got 6x AG silver, 5x AG gold and 4times top 15 in the Pro race (with fulltime amateurs 😉 ).

Today again it were Wim, Jan and Hans entering this race with for Wim and Hans high expectations and dying to simply confirm last year’s race. Showing that was not a 1day result. Jan, after a tough spring showed in his last 70.3 races that shape was getting there, despite some pain in the back.

The race had to change the run and bikecourses this year, so for every athletes the race was slightly unknow. But maybe also a good thing to change the racecourse of world championships from time to time…

During the first run Jan, Wim and Hans sticked close together but all on the right pace and showed already there that they belong to the better AG runners. Well paced and ready for a long day they stepped on their bikes. Jan was the first one, followed by Hans and Wim.

Jan M.jpg

Jan takes it seriously from the start and gets into T1 very fast!

Only 1lap later Hans was already spotted riding very hard and moving up between the pro riders, who started earlier. Jan and Wim kept in battle for AG podium, this during the whole bike course. During this bikecourse Wim could accelerate during the 2nd half of it and put down the bike 3rd in his AG, Jan in 4th and Hans who now was totally in front put down his bike  within the top 15 of the race and as first AG athlete. Meanwhile the Belgian Pro athletes unfortunately got DNF behind their names…so Hans also was first Belgian now. This in a discipline that was dominated by Belgians for years! (Vansteelandt brothers, Maris, Woestenborghs and Odeyn later).

Hans File

A 293NP ride for Hans during these world championships, with a 10K hilly run before and 30K hilly run after the bikecourse! This is what you need to win all AG! Try!

Once of the bike our athletes mostly are on their best, the engine heated up and loaded for a good off bike run! Today this wasn’t anything other! Hans had an excellent run and was in full control of the AG race, he dominated and wins the AG race but above all comes very close towards PRO top10 with an 11th place!

40530789_10205250298934608_8674347990904733696_n

Hans lifting the banner, a beautifull moment in Zofingen!

Behind this Wim and Jan were running very fast off their bike and it was Wim who nearly closed a 10′ gap with the leader in his AG by finishing 2nd…only 30″ behind the winner in his AG! Wim had a FANTASTIC season with the AG Belgian titles on all distances, the AG European title and becoming AG vice world champion!

Jan was in fight with 3rd position in his (and Hans) AG, places were expensive in this AG and for more than 25K Jan and number 3 in his AG were within a 1′ range of eachother! In the end Jan also finishes 4th, only a good 30″ behind number 3!
Wim gets 23rd and Jan 29th in the overall race! All together races to be proud of!!

Wim DC.jpg

Wim in search of bronze, then silver and finally finishing at 30″ of gold in his AG! Great racing!

So once again Zofingen left us with a lot of emotions, The Kona for duathletes but then colder and a totally different environment! Results to be proud of, whatever… Well done to all!

Yesterday Jens (3rd in Olympic Distance Köln – Germany) prooved already end of the season is coming and that means A-races are coming also!

Today in Balen Bregt gets 10th, moving up from 15th to 10 on the run!

Bregt with a fast sprintdistance race in Balen today – finishing 10th

Tony had his last preprace towards the Ironman World championships in Kona, Hawaii today…in Köln (Germany). His races turned out perfectly…untill a flat tyre!! His tyre was totalle ruptured but fortunately he found a piece of cardboad to put inside his tyre and fixed the bike! A bit more than 7′ he lost in this action and for sure some energy. But this ‘MacGyver’-mentality made him come back into the race, put down his bike with over 320NP ~ 72kg. But that’s not all, during his run he came back into the top 10 with the 2nd running time to finish the race 10th…only5′ after 3rd position!
Another strong race after his 2nd place in Chtriman 2018!

Next stop: Kona, Hawaii. And this athlete is more than on his place overthere!

Tony swallowing the flat tyre, and pushing through to the finishline!

September has kicked off very well…and we still have 29days left!

Ciao

Fast racing in The Netherlands and Spain today!

70.3 Medina de Rioseco (Spain) was one of David’s 3 A-races this season! An important one because loving to race there! And only 1 week after a trainingcamp in Frankfurt, he felt like he had to go fast!

39026785_1869585243348327_6643296022921478144_n.jpg

Another strong performance of David in Medina de Rioseca

A good swim, with one of his faster paces and already rollin’ out of T1 after 33′ he unleashed his legs again! David is a strong biker and on the flatter racecourse he wanted to move up quickly to let the other guys chasing him! Averaging 40,6km/h made him put down his bike in T2 2nd!

David T.jpg

David running to AG podium and overall top10 in Spain!

A tough run in the Spanish heat for David but still managing to get into the overall top 10 and becoming 3rd in his AG!
Strong season of our Spanish Bull with the motor of a German car!

In The Netherlands Leiderdorp was the battlescene for our athletes. Adrian and Vincent on the 1/4distance, Jan on the 70.3 distance!
Adrian, coming back from training camp, was more than ready to race at Leiderdorp. Winning here 2years ago…made him one of the favourites before the race of course.
A good swim of Adrian, but also Vincent coming out of the water not so far behind….

Adrian Finish leiderdorp

Adrian on his way to victory in Leiderdorp!

Both of our athletes moved up very quickly and at the moment Adrian took the lead he felt Vincent flying by…Vincent was busy putting down the best bikesplit today with a huge effort and at that point our athletes were 1 and 2 in the race. Not bad with +/-200 athletes behind them. This was also the order they put their bikes in T2. During the runcourse Vincent ran constantly and was already busy defending his podium, knowing Adrian was coming very strongly, a very consistent race over 3 discplines made him run towards another victory! Vincent defended his spot on the podium very well and realized his best 1/4 effort effort by finishing 3rd!

Adrian Podium

Adrian 1st, Vincent  3rd…both a athletes with a big smile after a tough race!

The 70.3 distance, with a 2.5K swim, was another LD test for Jan! Already done a good comebackrace to triathlon in Klazienaveen (Netherlands) he was keen on putting down an even better effort today! A good swim for Jan, followed by a slower T1 (dizzy because of the water…u all know the feeling) made him have to work himself forward. No riders overtaking him on the bike and racing very constantly during the 90K on his TTbike.

Jan Mbike.jpg

Despite pain in his lower back on the TT bike, Jan moved up strongly during his bike effort!

Once off the bike it’s Jan’s strongest point: Offbike running. Running several times an overall top10 time off he the bike in the world championships duathlon made this his specialty! In the first lap he had take time for a ‘cioccolato gelato’ but he flew towards top15…and approaching top 10 at the finishline! Finishing 11th just a few seconds behind number 10!

Jan M.jpg

A very fast run again for Jan, just missing top10 at the finishiline…finishing on a nice 11th place!

In La Gileppe, the yearly duathlon was held. A hilly course and quite some strong athletes at the starting line with for example U23 world champion Arnaud Dély. Both Robby (19th) and Wesley (24th) did a very good race and enjoyed racing these fine roads!

Wesley and Robby doing well in this tough race!

Ironman Lanzarote, our athletes strong in their entirity

Today Ironman Lanzarote was marked in red! Already awake early in the morning, ready to follow this race for which our athletes prepared themselves for months!
All athletes were really looking forward to this race! With the tough racecourse in Lanzarote also a race we approached with the respect needed for it. Realistic towards raceconditions and what would happen they entered the race!

33583369_10204907859293831_5126220149845655552_n.jpg

A strong swim of all our athletes, coming out of the water below 1h06′.
Bert swam with the better pro athletes and entered T1 in 52′. Johan, Steven and Hans got out in 1h02 and Sem followed only 4′ later in 1h06. A good idea, of not being in the water too long :-)!

Bert zwem

Bert left T1 after 55’59, leading his AG and soon took 1st overall AG place on the bike!

Once on the bike our athletes could unleash their builded stamina and power, correct pacing would be necessary and so they kept an eye on powermeter/Hr monitor.
For Bert, in the flow of the race in front not easy to keep the gazzz button under control, but after 80K he understood that with the marathon coming…he better kept control.
Hans from his side was moving up like #LaMachine always does, but controlled and not overpacing. As you can see in both files Bert (277NP) and Hans (279NP) had a similar NP, with that difference that Bert took off very hard and got regular in the 2nd half of the race, Hans builded up and kept a straight line in his poweroutput.

Hans Powerfile 279NP

Hans had a regular bikeride, with a higher NP on the climbs, a bit lower in the downhills but steady all race long!

Bert powerfile 277NP

Bert took off hard, risky even, but he turned the button to cruise control after 80K to take no risks for the run!

33644942_10204904273364185_7089360064879788032_n

A lonely ride for Hans, ‘An honest bikecourse where the best get to the front in the cycling part’ he said afterwards!

But not only B&H were moving up, Steven and Johan…who left T2 with Hans were also moving up and doing a wise race! Sem, who couldn’t run for weeks because of achillesproblems paced conservatively but moved up and was heading towards T2 not sure if he would run or not!

33614900_10204904273524189_447449619882835968_n.jpg

First I thought Johan had an injured thumb, but afterwards it seemed he had a good ride in Lanzarote

Coming into T2 is the easy part in the Ironman races it seems, many Pro athletes who had a DNF after the race. But about the DNF’s there said already more than worth it. So let’s talk about the finishers…

On the run course we were quite confident that if our athletes kept their pacing correct from the start that the run would be good. Everybody was in shape, ready to run long and medium hard. Going too fast in the beginning is a killer, and that’s an awareness every athlete should have. An off bike marathon is not a regular sunday run. In the end,  thre strong and the smart racers will survive.

With Hans and Bert within the top3 of their agegroup starting the run we had 2 athletes racing for the podium. Hans started at the planned pace, Bert slightly faster…faster also than his PB. A bit tricky at that point, but afterwards we saw HR was perfectly under control.

33575141_10213175572158028_4230224396339380224_n.jpg

Both athletes had a steady run  (HR & Pace), Bert was flying and killed his PB in an Ironman run to finish after 3h08′ in this heavy race before finishing 2nd AG, 26th Pro’s included. Hans had a 3h16′ run but never really fell back and also ran steady. Finishing the line in the right position (7th AG) after an honest race. You don’t choose your agegroup in the end, finishing 30th (14Pro athletes in front) and 7th in your AG says a lot about the strength of the opponents also.

While Hans and Bert raced for the first places in their AG Steven, Johan and Hans were still at the run course. And how!!? Each of these athletes amazed in something. Johan and Steven in Consistency and patience to pace well and ‘keep the engine running’ as we say. Pacing correctly always works, both athletes took it further than we could expect even!
Steven also killed his marathon PB in this heavy race and moved up strong towards 12th place in his AG!

33574481_1722371591183164_1557188698661978112_n

Steven puts down his marathon PB in Lanzarote and finishes very strong on 12th place (AG)!

Johan, in his first Ironman…not the easiest one, was patient on the bike. He kept down the HR and cruised towards T2 to finish of with a good run. Finishing in 11h03′ in Lanzarote is fast!

33599913_1788912207822437_8346351006480596992_n.jpg

Johan had a perfect race in his first IM!

And then there was Sem, as we agreed on not running to not take risks on his achilles I switched off the tracker…but all of a sudden the eye felt on Sem again…and we noticed he was running…after several weeks of not running not easy! But after passing halfway all athlete minds know you can’t quit the race! He kept going and finishes the race in a very decent time of 12h21. For sure there was even more in it. But Sem showed us in the end where Ironman and triathlon in all disciplines is about. About perseverance, defeating yourself, having pleasure while racing and the satisfaction afterwards! Nice job Sem!

The ‘Houston rockets’ and medals on French and Belgian duathlon championships!

This weekend was ‘championshipsweekend’, with the Northern American Ironman championships in Texas (USA) for Cai and Sam, the French duathlon championships on the long distance for Hans, Séb, Steven and Inge and the national sprintduathlon championships for Wim adrenaline would rush through the veins. For sure!

The good about these sports are that if you are prepared well, you are ready for racing! With dedication to the raceplan (and nutrition) the rest follows normally! If it’s hot (30-35°C in Texas) or cold (8°C in France and cold rain all race long) that doesn’t matter. Shape decides what will happen, all the rest are sidestories.

In Texas, both Sam and Cai took off well during the swimstart. Somehow Cai found herself closed in a bit during the swim but despite that both athletes got on their bikes in +/- the time that was planned. And then, the race starts for real!
On the bike Sam had to close down a 10′ gap with his opponents in the M40. With topathletes such as Dan Stubleski, Mosley and others it would a nice race to follow.
39Pro athletes also at the starting line, many points to gather for the KPR-ranking, important to get to Kona! This strong field and perfect weather conditions (as in almost no wind) would lead to a legendary race with several records broken! Matt Hanson for example ran the off bike marathon (42.1km) in 2h34′ after 3.8K swim and 180K bike. This day in Texas will be remembered. But not only by the toprange of Pro athletes racing it.

Soon it became clear that Sam was moving up in his race, of course this is a well known fact in Ironman, but you still have to do it! With the flat and straight roads it was a good race to pace very consistent.
Despite the groups Sam had to overtake, which made him push a bit harder of course, he felt great on his bike and never found himself into trouble.

Sam NP

Sam’s bike effort of 278NP-4h18′ , was good for the fastest bikesplit in Texas!

In the very end of the race Sam was clearly going a bit harder than his nearest opponents, of which a few just behind him. So it would also become a tactical race, once off the bike! After 4h18′ the bike was put in T2. A quick calculation made us already dream of a very fast time. But as everyone knows, in a LD triathlon you better don’t dream. You have to do it.

Cai from her side was asked to pace at 150watts and keep her HR around 145BPM. She did what she had to do and also felt very good on the bike, enjoying her race she moved up A LOT untill she got on 8th place in her AG in the end of the bikecourse.
With 10women within 3′ in this AG all would be played during the run!

A lot of questions about the fast bikesplits in Texas, but the answer on the real bike length is simple. 176km (as in many Ironman races), no wind…and unfortunately indeed no referees controlling the ‘bunch’ of athletes. The better cyclists of course have no benefit of this. The ‘bunch’ has. A pity! It made many athletes come off the bike close together. But as Sam said this morning. Once you start running…’the masks fall off’.

The first kilometers of the run Sam started in a good pace, despite that he was passed by a couple of athletes who were running at 2h45′ pace. Wise decision of Sam not to follow but follow his own pace. Once the athletes were approaching halfway the runcourse it became clear that race opponents of Sam were the guys that were predicted. The athletes starting too fast were left behind.  Stubleski in first place, Caron and Mosley were the guys who would be there untill the finishline. And no one to underestimate of course.
At kilometer 35 Sam had a 3′ gap behind Stubleski, at that point…it seemed that 2nd place was the highest possible thing to achieve and still ready to finish below 8h30′ with a fast marathon!

That marathon was fast, and in the last kilometers Sam went all out and closed down the gap to 30″ at 40.1km! 30″ behind with 2K to go…Stubleski and Sam in a nice battle, with the last 2km of Sam pushing it all the way he finished….9″ before Stubleski!

Sam Run

Sam with a fantastic marathon at the end of the race, 2h53′ and with 9″ ahead just enough for the AG win!

Sam never ran in 1st position during the whole race untill the very end…how nice is that! But also a big thumb up to Stubleski, making the race hard during the marathon. Athletes can lift eachother to a higher level during a clean battle!
For the 3rd year in a row he gets sub 3h on the marathon, in Texas he even broke his fastest marathontime in an Ironman!

Sam G AG results

A result to be very proud of, this will be printed and put on my wall today!

The result of Sam is the result of a real AG athlete with a full-time job, thinking no-nonsense, enjoying it all and putting in the effort where needed. That sub8h30′ was just a matter of time.

We would almost forget to say, but Sam did qualify for Hawaii of course. Where he will race for the 9th!! time! But first, rest!
In Kona he will join Van, Bert and Tony, our other athlete who already qualified earlier!

Sam G finish

Sam crossing the finishline in Texas, no words needed!

In the female race it was Cai who ran a good marathon and was able to finish her race in 11h10′! Finishing 10th in her AG was a very honest result. The female AG’s don’t have the quantity of slots that the male athletes have. With only 1-3 slots divided in the Ironmans it’s not easy to get one but still chances to go!
Well done!

In France, all eyes on the national championships long distance duathlon (10-80-10). With 4of our athletes, the race was one of the maingoals of this spring for these athletes.
Hans won the race in Douai already, but now it had the championship label…and that’s what you could notice from the start! A very fast start with several athletes running the first 10K in 30-32′ here. With Hans heading towards transition in 17th position, Séb and Steven ran a bit further and Inge in 8th position in the female race they entered T1.

Hans VDB

Hans picking up one of the female athletes, who started 5′ earlier, during the first run!

The bikecourse in Douai is full with roundabouts, turnings, ‘faux plats’ and wind…always wind! Today there was some extra with rain all day long 🙂 Well, if you come from Flanders…that must give wings!
On the bike Hans decided not take risks on these dangerous roads, but halfway the first lap…the speaker already noticed he moved up towards 13th position. At that point it was only Jean Eudes Demaret (Former Cofidis pro cyclist and 2016 Elite national champion triathlon) who rode slightly harder. Behind that it was Hans who had to face 2 little groups. Strong as he is, the further the athletes went in the race … the more he moved forward. To finally put down his bike in 7th position! Excellent! A top 10 in this field would have been a great job!
Séb came back to Steven on the bike and both athletes moved up well during this bikecourse. Inge from her side, a bit afraid of the weather before the race, had strong legs and after the bikecourse she put down the bike 3rd! Very close to number 2 and with a good gap behind her.

Hans VDB bike

314NP for Hans his bikeride, unfortunately the last 5-6km towards the race location (each lap) athletes had to be very carefull with slippery roundabouts and cars blocking the roads.

In this type of LD duathlons the places are not divided in the first run, not on the bike…but during the 2nd run…with Hans putting down the bike 7th and a 1’30” -3′ gap  on the faster runners of Run1 it seemed impossible to still move up places. But from the first kilometers Hans had a good pace. His running style looked relaxed and with a 2′ gap behind him he only had to look in front of him! In front of the field a couple of athletes were crashing as usually on the long distance.

HansJesse

Hans in 7th, only 20″ and 1’20 behind on 5 and 6. With this pace 5th pace would be possible!

After 5km Hans still was 7th, but in those last 5km a lot happened in front of the race and suddenly Hans appeared very close to number 5 and 6, which he overtook in the last kilometer. Jean Eudes Demaret crashed totally in the last 5K and his 4′ advantage melted down fast! With only 7″ left at the finishline Hans finishes 5th today in this field!

Hans run 2 geen greintje verval

Hans never dropped the pace during his off bike run! Which made him move up in the field and finish strong!

Steven had some bad luck today and got a drafting penalty, missed the turning for the 2nd loop and because of this he ran an extra 800m.

31484458_10204808733415746_2056076062357454848_n.jpg

A good looking Steven on the racecourse, but the weatherconditions made the race more chaotic than planned!

Séb from his side did an excellent race, he builded up from behind and finishes 45th after an excellent 2nd run. Ready for the LD triathlons coming now!

Hans finish

‘La Machine’ and Le Nord….rain or sunny, he eats it!

In the female race Inge never looked giving back her 3rd place at another competitor. A focussed 2nd run in which she has to learn to be confident. If there’s suffering, everyone is suffering! Finishing 3rd on these national championships is another step she made! With Ironman Zurich in July she has her first Full distance triathlon coming! If you can do this today, the Ironman will be peanuts ;-)!

Inge

A last word with Inge, clear language.

After France, back to Belgium…in which the national sprint duathlon championship was held. Normally I don’t like sending athletes to this format. Because of the lottery aspect in it. But with Wim, we have a very particular athlete. A fast and steady runner with more and more cycling experience also. In the master category this was his only medal missing in Belgium after 2years of duathlon! And once again this strong master showed his fast legs by getting into  T1 first. But with his opponents not changing shoes he missed the train towards T2. It made him chase the leaders on the bike, but with not enough cooperation it was the bronze medal that was the highest possible to get! And he did! First maingoal of the season for Wim accomplished! Now full focus on the European long distance championships, which will be followed by the nationals in May!

Wim DC

Wim, bronze in the national championships sprint duathlon! Excellent performance and ready for the Europeans!

Victory in Eschweiler (Germany), strong performances in The Netherlands and some powerfull cycling of our U23 riders in Belgium!

Strong performances today in several half marathons in Germany and The Netherlands for our athletes!

It was Jens, who already ran a very fast half marathon in January…who tried to race hard today in his final preprace towards his ’18 tri season!
In Eschweiler (Germany), he got a hilly (260D+) race ahead of him with some offroad trails in the course. A very consistent race with uphills at 3’50/km and downhills and flatter sections at 3’30/km he managed his race just above 1h15′!
Fast for this young triathlete, who made steps once again and we will have to keep an eye on him in his mostly German raceschedule!

28908218_455687841515822_1300925003_n

Jens chasing the 1h15′ in Germany

Another half marathon in Sluis (The Netherlands) for a couple of our triathletes! A perfectly flat race with the wind as an opponent and an absolute topfield at the starting line! Many of our athletes crushed their PR a few weeks before the start of the season and are ready for the duathlons/triathlons coming up!

In Sluis our female athletes in particular did an excellent job by putting down fine races and coming closer to their 70.3 goals this gives a mental boost! In the male race our first athletes were Bart V (1h20), Wesley (1h27) and Bart DB (1h30), they sure had time for some photoshoots!

A bit more north in The Netherlands, the yearly duathlon in Hilversum was the opener of the national duathlon circuit! For the first time in 6years without Jan (sick, flu)  but with Adrian! And Adrian defended our presence well with a very nice 5th place in this sprintduathlon! A good test, and already a good result leading up towards his next maingoals in Ter Idzard (Netherlands) and 70.3 Mallorca (Spain)!

adrian

Freezing temperatures for Adrian in the Netherlands, a nice 5th today!

In Belgium the first triathlon of the season also took place, with Vincent entering this race and finishing 28th after a good period of training and putting a big step forward!

Our cyclists currently had or a big training weekend before some A-races that are coming with GP Slovakia (UCI1.2), Arden Challenge (UCI 2.12), GP Adria Mobilia (UCI 1.2),…or hat had some serious racing going on this weekend!
With Svenne (4th) and Guillaume (3rd) yesterday our younger cyclists Robbe and Dries, both U23 riders took part in Budingen-Zoutleeuw (1.12). With once again Dries totally in front of the race he keeps on confirming what he has in his legs.

28907755_1955684217792200_1514175071_n

Our riders are getting sharp towards the climbing races next weeks!

Going into the final of the race for victory again, Dries finishes 6th today after a stunning race! Robbe from his part is racing his first year U23/Elite and the longer distances in these races seem to like him and he likes the distances. Sprinting in front of the peloton lead him to 26th place today!

Dries MAesen.jpg

Another nice 6th place for Dries today, cumulating good results!

Next to this a couple of our athletes seem to get stronger than their gear at the moment,

this weekend our athletes sent messages of broken chains, wheels and gears…are they becoming so strong or have the icy temperatures an influence on this…who knows?! Let’s see!

Congratulations to all our athletes racing out there today, cold weather…but hot results!

Jesse

Stage and GC win for Daniel in Greece – 2 Silver medals on Belgian champs Xduathlon!

Great weekend for our athletes this weekend, several top10 performances in multiple cycling races this weekend. Not 1 of our riders didn’t play a role in front of the races! Coming out of the winter in shape and week by week they are racing with a very offensive style!

Yesterday it was Daniel (One of Roumania’s promissing cyclists) who, after a winter of hard working in difficult weather conditions from time to time and a hard training camp a few weeks ago, who won the race in Kilkis (Greece) after a breakaway which he set up in the last climb to finish solo….and take win + GC lead.

Daniel Crista

Daniel on his way to victory in stage 1

Today was very important for him, because he could win his first ever stage race, and begin his season with a super feeling!
He found himself in the lead pack and was even capable of sprinting for victory again! 2nd…and of course the most important of all is the win in this stage race!
Also important is that it’s obvious this win is already opening new doors for this young rider and we are glad to soon see him at the starting line at some interesting races!

Daniel Crista

Winning this stage race was opening the season with a deam, well done!

In Belgium the national championships offroadduathlon were held in Retie.
Inge (women), Tony and Wim DC (men) were ready to rumble…despite the migraine attack in the 2nd half of this week and Wim twisting his ankle past sunday. Little annoying things an athlete can miss…but there’s always a way to overcome these small issues, and that’s by being strong between your ears!
Both proove they were/are!

In the female race Inge slightly missed her running start and was set on chasing the other female athletes! Aged 42 she was today in full battle with the younger girls and (former) PRO triathlete Adam. But a fighter as she is she was capable of putting a big step forward on the bike during this race and come off the bike in battle for the medals.
With a good off bike run Inge takes silver overall and silver (AG) behind Adam today!

inge.jpg

Inge 2nd on the nationals Xduathlon

The male race was full of specialists in this specific part of triathlon/duathlon, but with the defending national champion on the road in masters category (Wim) and Tony (multi talented athlete in all sports and heading to Chtriman 2018 and the Ironman World champs in Hawaii in October) our athletes are not to underestimate!
Tony had a fantastic start, but had to admit after the race he blew up his legs a bit there by passing the 1K mark at 3’04/km.

Tony

Tony in full attempt to move up on the bike!

This made him drop a few places during the first run, but with some good breathing on the bike his body got full of energy for the last part of the race and on the bike he moved up before putting his bike down in T2 and have a good off bike run towards 14th place today!

Heading towards 14th place in the championships

Wim, who had his eyes focussed on the masters race, came into T1 just shortly behind Tony. With a consistend bikesplit in which he didn’t lose any spots and could maintain his 2nd place in the race he was ready to take this silver medal in a racing format in which he had to dare his black beast. That black beast is called: technical MTB-skills, he dared himself with success!

1year ago Wim had 0 championships medals, now he won Gold, silver and bronze in all duathlon disciplines and became vice world champion on the long distance…top athlete!

Next weeks our cyclists will be racing races around Europe and Asia, our triathletes will put away the MTB and get out there TT-bikes! With in particular the African continental champs, the North American championships and Ironman Lanzarote as first big international races!

Train smart, Perform better!

Victory for Daniel in Greece!

The only way is up” that’s what our Roumanian pro-cyclist Daniel thought today!
Early in the race in the good group and a solo attempt on the last climb made him ride a fantastic race today!!
After his solo he wins his race in Greece today and leads the general classification with more than 1′!
This was his first race of the season, spoken about an entrance!
As you can see, even in tough weather conditions athletes can train smart and perform better, a lot of clothes or turbosessions…there’s always a way…find it!

Daniel Crista

🇧🇪️In Belgium Guillaume rode a good rade in Gages and takes 6th in te end. Not lucky today to miss the right breakaway and being forced in a long day of pursuit.Very strong way of racing of Guillaume these days and slowly but surely growing to a topshape. Guillaume his made is set on qualifying for the UCI GranFondo world championships now.

More east in Jeneffe-en-Condroz it was Svenne who did get in that right breakaway. Still missing a few % after his crash, he was forced to let go the train and found himself also in a group chasing the 2 leaders on this tough racecourse. Going to the finishline Svenne takes 8th today!

Guillaume

Our cyclists are definitely not playing poker, they throw their cards on the table and race at full strength!
But how would it be with our Ironman athletes these days. A very important training period now for most of them, in particular for the guys/women who race the early IM races in South Africa, Texas (USA) and Lanzarote (Spain)!
A few of them are having a very specific weekend, others are starting training camp tomorrow and then we had the athletes racing the North C-trail!
Nothing than good feeling and results with nice results for for example Bert on place 8 in this 21K trailrun! Matthieu (heading to IM SA) just outside top 20!

Cold weather, hot results!

Splendid weekend for our athletes this weekend with several top 10 results in cycling, duathlon and road running races!

This morning, early race for Jan, Wim, Jeroen and Arne!
Jan raced 10K in Lembeke after a loaded trainingweek and went home with the win and a lot of fruit 😉
Our other athletes had to race the 26K and this went totally according to plans, Arne takes the win in this long race while Jeroen was in for the podium all race long. In the he finishes 5th! A few minutes later it was Wim who finished in his PR on similar distances!

LEmbeke.jpg

Later that day our tri/duathletes were ready to race in Nossegem, near the Brussels airport. A tough and muddy racecourse, a perfect test towards the first roadtriathlons within a few weeks.
For Inge this was a final test before the Belgian championships next week! A test in which she succeeded in style taking the win with over 4′ of advantage. But feet on the ground, this was a smaller regional race. Next week it’s time for her first national champs. Our othere ladies performed well in Inge’s footsteps. With Hannah (6th-3rd AG), Judith (9th) and Els (11th).
Our male athletes could make a fist and kept a very positive feeling after the race with Robby and Kristof fighting eachother and a battle for the podium in the Masters +50 category between Bart and Raymond. With Bart finishing 4th, Raymond 5th.

Inge winning the overall race in Nossegem

Our cyclists didn’t miss their season at all!

Our elite riders are going hard at the moment,
in Vollezele (Elite/U23) Anthony, Dries and Robbe were at the starting line. An earlier breakaway on this tough racecourse with in it…Robbe (U23-rookie). In the head of the peloton Dries and Anthony trying to get in the front. For Anthony the race ended with a flat after 80K. Robbe didn’t manage to stay in the breakaway untill the finishline but showed his guts to immediately make it in this breakaway in his 3rd race as U23. Dries tried for 120K to close the gap with the front and managed in it within the last kilometers. Finishing 23rd but closing down a gap on 20 riders…then you may conclude you missed the right train!
Shape is there, and next few weeks these riders won’t be just filling the peloton.

anthony.jpg

Anthony heading up front in Vollezele – Elite/U23

Svenne from his side had and important race in Nivelles, 75K – 1050D+, 3smaller climbs each lap and 22 laps. Yes, then you count 66 (!)smaller hills to race on. From very nearby we saw Svenne break away several times but he didn’t get a big gap on his opponents. Rain in the last hour made the course quite slippery, not easy to manage and heading to the last climb he finished 6th! A strong race in a peloton that was very difficult to control for him! Upcoming weeks, more climbing races will be on these riders programs!

Strong athletes, they didn’t miss the start of the season…they didn’t miss winterpleasure!

#jessevnsportscoaching #TSPB

Strong weekend in Europe and Asia!

Splendid results of our athletes today, our athletes went out hard…to warm up the engines!

🇪🇦️This morning already early wake up for our Spanish bull David to race marathon in Sévilla, aiming on a time of 2h50′ he did a perfect race with even in the end some fast miles finishing 2h54′!
Next race will be a half marathon for sure, but with a swim and run before it 🙂

David t.jpg

🇹🇭️ In Thailand nice results of the cyclists of WTT, with Tine and Olé racing in the front and managing an 8th place for Tine in the end!

WTT.jpg

🇧🇪️ In Belgium Brussels-Opwijk (U23 classic) was on for Dries and Robbie (1st year U23). Dries managed to be in the front despite the cold and reconfirmed his way up after his accident last year, while Robbe picked up nice experiences at this level.

In Lens-Saint-Rémy (UCI1.18) 5 riders at the starting line, some with a bit of fear because of the wind, cold and a lot of riders. Others with legs waiting to explode!
And exploding they did, Guillaume out in front from the first lap with 12 other riders of which 1 teammate. After 76k – 500 D+ Guillaume took 5th, while his teammate won. Guillaume didn’t miss the start of his season for sure! Furthermore it was Svenne missing the right train in his race and with a solo-performance in the last 15K he managed to finish alone at 9th place! A bit further Joachim (first group) and Niels finished their races satisfied…picking up rhytm to next weeks where they will try to go even harder!

maesen.jpg

In Maldegem Anthony was totally in the race and managed to get in a group of 30 riders…untill his Di2-battery run dead. A good feeling again for him and with several back to back races coming he is keen on the hills!

Niels

Our CX men Xtof and Kevin, both 6th in their category closed a long cold and wet winterseason with good races! Going into their ‘resting period’ with good shape…will definitely be positive for what’s coming in summer!

Furthermore in Belgium some of our triathletes had trailrunning and road racing races planned, overall conclusion is that the feeling is good, the output is good and the A-races come closer. Let it come!

Next week some tough races ahead, we like!

Have a nice recovery 🙂!

Periodisation is the key, the key to racing fast!

Cyclists, runners and triathletes are masters in training, training big volumes and sometimes training hard. Or training big volumes too hard? A lot can go wrong approaching your season. And after all, does it really is necesseary to go in ‘overuse’ all the time?

No, is the answer! Periodisation is the key to your season. I always refer to the ‘elastic-story’, which our athletes will know.
None of our athletes approaches his or her season without a ‘masterplan’, without this ‘masterplan’ no season or no long-term racing career will be good and no performance will be there.  Putting together a macrocycle with my athletes is something I do from the very first day we started coaching athletes. The holistic approach towards a full year with Resting period, racing period,… is part of the key.

I sometimes hear that topperforming athletes, even amateur (AG) athletes are training 20-30h/week for example in Ironman. Well is that true? And is that an approach in which you can put in enough variation and specific racepreparing impulses.

If we look at the graph underneath you can see a 13h AVG training on annual base is fairly enough to get qualified to Kona (Ironman Hawaii), take AG podium and put down a sub9 Ironman.

13h avg

If you approach training with a vision an AVG of 13h on annual basis is enough to race hard, also in Ironman racing!

Of course there’s no ‘general recipe’ for all athletes, every athlete has need to different impulses, volumes,…not everybody gets in full shap with 12h avg, some need more. The approach to your athlete/cyclist always is a personal approach with an eye for his history and future goals.

Variation, variation in volume, variation in impulses, variation in mentally loaded periods, variation in food,…variation that’s what you need to have during a whole year of training to peak at the right moments. Underneath you can see an annual graph of an amateur, full-time working triathlete who already qualified for Kona, won several du/triathlons and this year was 1st amateur on the duathlon world champs, 1st AG in Challenge Roth in 8h44 and won a Long distance duathlon in France. This athlete had an annual avg training volume of 15h, with no extreme peaks in volume. The athlete chooses not to go on training camp, but to spend vacation to racing and family.

These 3peaks are like hammers on the block in the end…

Hans jaar

Periodisation:  whether you are professional or amateur…all starts with a plan to be at your best at the right time!

The sauce on your spaghetti is not about the volume of the tomatoes, it’s about the spices…and some will get a very hot pepper from me!

Our athletes continue preparation towards 2018 and build smart…to perform better!
Tomorrow groupsession #2 is on, this will be a ‘reversathlon’ which we will enjoy till our first cramp of preparation!

Ciao

Groupsession 1 – October 2017 – hilly run/spin

Last week Ironman Hawaii 2017 was held, and the last cyclingraces also…that means closure time of the season!
Meanwhile our cyclists and triathletes who ended their season earlier this month are already building up towards 2018 and how! A lot of determination and feeling keen on being in shape at the right moments in 2018 again! In the end hard work pays off, and for that motivation is key! Our always positive group was ready to go today with more than 15′ to wait on the clock…A good sign let’s say!

Races are won on training at home, in silence. No hashtags, no Strava Kom’s, nothing sexy about that, dedication helps…self-discipline helps… to perform!

Today the environment of Brussels was the location to be for our athletes!

We started the day with a nice fartlekrun!

After a longer muddy and hilly warm-up, our athletes were ready to put in some efforts. For each with his/her own mission.

IMG_20171022_121016693.jpg
After the run we went for an aerobic, but hilly ride on ‘our loop’, a limited wattage uphill was set and so the group stayed +/- nicely together during the hours that followed!
We saw our athletes came out of rest well, motivated and still with some power in those legs!

IMG_20171022_120537227.jpg

Wim and Anil enjoying the +10% Flemish climbs

Enjoy our athletes in action

On to the next step in preparation now in the next weeks that will follow! Stay cool, put on your HRmonitor and enjoy…like we enjoyed today!

Train smart, perform better!

Magic May was a good appetizer…half Iron fest in Canada and France!

Excited! That was how our athletes went into the Half Iron races Ventouxman (France), Troyes (France) and Quassy (USA)!

Ambitions for these races were high, but realistic. They were ready to race hard!

In Ventouxman, Alex got the heaviest race course he ever did in front of him, he managed well and can consider this as a perfect lead-up towards Ironman Klagenfurt (Austria)!

In Troyes, a bit closer to Belgium Cai and Inge were the female athletes. Johan, Steven, Hans and Sam the male competitors. With Cyril Viennot (France – 2015 ITU world champion ELITE) and Antoine Perche (France) the level would be high, and getting into the front of the race difficult! In the female race Julie Le Colleter (France – Multiple medal winner on French national championships and GP duathlon winner) would be the top of the race.

Hans and Sam sure are well known in France so not capable of racing in the shadow. This 2700-80-20 Half triathlon for Sam is a race between his 2 Ironmans ( South Africa and Lake Placid), For Hans the final lead-up towards his 3rd A-race of the season…challenge Roth (Germany).

Our athletes went out for the swim well and got out of the water ready to race the bike! It were Steven and Johan who came out first, before Hans and Sam…followed a bit later by our female athletes.

steven.jpg

Steven first out of the water and ready for a very good race!

Once on the bike it was clear the power was in the legs and our athletes rode theirselves to the front. It was Hans who passed Johan/Steven first, followed by Sam riding a 300watt paced race and have a steady but fast race!

JohanF.jpg

Johan and Steven on the  roads around Troyes, both chasing a good result.

Very soon it became clear that Hans was keen on another topperformance, trusting on his powerfull bike and fast run off the bike he was ready to…put down his bike 12th.
Sam followed a bit later.

bikehans

Hans pushing his own limits and picking up group by group in Troyes

SamGY bike.jpg

Sam shortly behind Hans going faster every lap and getting ready to run steady!

Meanwhile Inge was capable of getting into 2nd place in the female race behind Le Colleter and  it would be a hard mission to keep that spot in this field. Cai from her side moved up on the bike and as there was no +50 category she would race in the +40 cetegory. At the end of the bike she came close to the podium in that younger category.

ingebike.jpg

Another massive performance of Inge in Troyes, who rides towards the podium!

Power Hans Troyes.jpg

Hans puts a regular 313watts on the pedals and it made him move forward…fast!

Mostly it’s the run where all the fun becomes PAIN, but as we were in France…PAIN was only French bread. So feeling no pain…just dreaming of a big bread after the race…makes it work!

Hans and Sam both in pole-position for a top20 in T2 started running on a fast pace and they managed till the end. Hans with, once again, superlegs ran the 4th running split (!) and was capable of running himself towards 5th place! A place never expected before the race…in this field!

Podium HANS.JPG

Hans is getting on the podium a lot lately and in Troyes it’s no different and well earned after a perfect race!

Sam kept his pace and ran a steady 3’55/km to end up 18th today and looks back confident towards his next Ironman after todays race!

SamG Run

Not so much later Steven finishes before Johan! The female race was still on at that moment and Inge, who feels very fine on training lately, was going for a very strong race and didn’t only win in the masters category, but also got 2nd overall!

IngeRoelandt.jpg

2nd place for Inge in Troyes, and she can look back happy to that!!

Not too far behind some other female power was on her way to the finish, Cai who got 7th (masters) did a +/-20′ faster race than her last participation in Troyes!

Cairun.jpg

Cai running off the bike with her faster pair of legs!

In Quassy (USA) our Canadian (and Swiss) athletes went out for a first A-race of the season. For these athletes it would directly be their first tri of the season…not an easy one to begin with!

Canadians.jpg

Andreas – Allan – Corey pretty relaxed before the race!

During winter they worked a lot on their swim effort and it payed off. Corey and Allan came out of the water quite close to each other…but Andreas kept contact also! And that’s a good sign towards the Ironman coming!! Happy about this!

Once on the bike the mission is to move up, to be capable to start running in the front of the field! Corey really unleashed his legs on this heavy race course…the bikecourse had +/-1300 D+ for 90K and it made him move up towards pole position for the medals after he bike!

A bit further both Allan and Andreas made their way towards the front a bit less aggressive but ready to start running well! Allan had a bikecrash only 3km before T2…which fortunately didn’t stop him from moving on!

I knew these athletes were running well, but how would they run after the bike. I consider this after bike run as a specialty and knew they trained at the right intensities and  right volume to get this in balance. And they did. All 3 of our athletes put down a top 10 running time in the end…and Corey he smashed it! With 1h21 on 300D+ (!!!) running course he could get himself on the podium of this Rev3 in Quassy!

coreyPodium.jpg

Corey with the fastest running split towards 2nd place behind David Morris (5th IM Lake Placid – 9th IM 70.3 Atlantic City)

Allan and Andreas came close to top10 but just stayed out of it on 11th and 12th place with a fast run off the bike! They didn’t miss their start of the season and with another race in a few weeks this is good for the confidence!

Coreyrun

Corey ‘smooth’ on the runcourse, heading towards the fastest run!

Not only raceday in France and Canada, but in Belgium our athletes raced fast in Meer, L’eau d’Heure ,… and a special format: “Swike”. This is a ‘Swim-Bike’ event. A bit like a triathlon without an ending…but ok! Anyway for this edition it was one of our younger triathletes Pascal who managed his first podium of his career finishing 3rd!

For Anthony it was retake of races after a week out of competition to rest a bit in an already nice season!  Svenne is recovering from his crash and at the moment we only do electrostimulation on the muscles.
Guillaume from his side took 9th on saturday and today in Grace-Hollogne, on a tough bike course, he chose to attack. At the end of the race he found himself in the lead group but a tactical choice broke this group in 2 and Guillaume had to be satisfied with 4th place! Not easy for a hungry athlete! Week by week this rider is in the front…there will be other opportunities.

As we coach (a strictly limited/exclusive) small group of youth cyclists, we don’t often put info about these young riders online, simply because I don’t want young athletes put under pressure. But we are glad to announce that one of our young riders could take the regional championshipsjersey (road cycling) this weekend after already having the regional championshipsjersey in the cyclocross competition.

We have a past, the present and definitely the future. A future with well motivated people structuring their sport into their life!

Train smart, Perform better!
Jesse

Our athletes on fire…

Magic May, that’s how we baptised this month…because of immediate wins on the first day of that month! But we’ll have to adapt this…to Magic 17 if things roll the way they roll right now! On this page a quick overview of the metal our athletes earned so far this season!

The weekend started with splendid results of Adrian in 70.3 Mallorca,  we knew from his last tests his shape was well, his shape was good. If nothing went wrong…he couldn’t be bad at all…

The most steady race in his young career so far ended up super well!

His swim was fast, his bikecourse he was powerfull and he came off the bike run well!

adrianswim

‘You run 3’50-4’00 pace’ we said before the race…he did and ran a regular 3’54/km after the tough bikecourse. In the end he realises 2nd place in his AG and 29th overall (pro field included).

AdrianRun.jpg

Keep an eye on your pulse AND pace, it can prevent u from exploding at the end of the race!

It’s great to see an athlete evolving from a non-finisher ending up in the ambulance to a podiumdancer on the Ironmancircuit! Some people thought his 5th overall place in IM 70.3 Turkey was a coincidence…he prooves it’s not…at all!

Adrian.jpg

Definitely an earned finger in the air finishing 2nd

Great determination and motivation in the head of this athlete, but that’s a must have for our athletes!

Sophie/raph went to L’eau d’Heure for winning the Amphiman swimrun. A big test with in total 38K running and swimming. The water only measured 12-13°C…cold!

sophie raph.jpg

For both this was a big test towards the World Championships in Sweden where they will have to conquer >60km of swimming, trailing and running!

They did great and with a 10′ advantage on the 2nd team together they could put this victory in their pocket!

Sophie Raph2.jpg

Tough racing on this hilly and cold race course! Together they PULL eachother to their limits!

But these big races weren’t all this weekend. Our athletes managed to get in the front of the field of several races!

In Tournai (UCI 1.12C)Guillaume finishes 4th behind 2 French Professional riders who joined him in the breakaway…’total loss’ behind the race, so he did give it all!

Guillaume.jpg

Guillaume hidden in the leading group finishes first in Tournai (Belgium)

In Triathlons in Geel and Bilzen our athletes did very good races leading up to the bigger goals! In Geel it was Tony who got himself in the top 10, topping off his race with a 3’32/km 10K run!

Uitslag Geel.jpg

Tony after his chase on the front of the field ends up 9th overall!

TonyBike.jpg

Tony is only swimming for 2years at the moment, so he MUST try to come back on the bike. With a 320NP he came off the bike in touch of the top 10 and his 10K at 3’32/km avg brought him to 9th!

But not only in belgium triathlon was on, in France (Choisy-Au-Bac) the first half triathlon of the season for a few of our athletes was planned! The perfect way to begin your season…Despite cold water to swim in and rain during the bikecourse! Arne, Michael, Toon and Hannah did great…with in the end an AG podium for Hannah!

Hannah

arne.jpg

Arne starting the run with cold muscles after a 13degrees swim and rain on the cyclingpart!

And what if our long distance triathletes start running their PB’s in 10K races just before the season…in Fredericton (Can) Corey runs his PB and takes 3rd overall! Our athletes are on fire!

Corey.jpg

Corey running his fastest 10K split ever in Fredericton!

We couldn’t dream it better than how things are happening!

The output of working hard, working smart…but make sure the input is the right input 😉

Ciao

Jesse

The heat is on…astonishing around Europe!

Our athletes are known for not working hard, but working smart and correct…we race hard, we party hard (and correct ;-))! It’s all about fun, no?

Today was marked in my agenda since October 1st, because of some fine races this weekend. Not necessarily for winning them…but for putting a good result, the rest follows from that point.
Not so long ago someone asked me why are athletes are capable of being good around the year, the answer I didn’t give and I won’t give. But I might say this about this: ‘Never train in panic, never train as being someone frustrated to perform…and always keep your cool’.

Jens, an athlete (as so many others…) which I started working with in May ’16 after having severe injuries and underperforming  the level he has in his body had his first Multi-event coming up…the Eschweiler duathlon, a sprintduathlon in Germany with  over 200participants. Duathlon, a great sport, is alive…only not in Belgium. In Belgium it’s dead. Dead as never before. A good proof are the ETU Short distance championships of past saturday. Ridiculous Belgian results for a country with a great past in this sport. (OK, critics I can handle…no worries, my back has become strong past years…let it come to me). Whatever, in some countries this sport is alive…at least in Eschweiler it is! 201finishers for sprintduathlon…and in the end one of our athletes winning the race!

Jens wins this race after running personal records, but also cycling personal records!

Jens R.jpg

Jens running to victory in Germany!

Still I would like to give a small point to work on, 2nd transition was slightly off 😉

JenRoegiers uitslag

And that duathlon is alive abroad also shows the 200registrations for the famous Duath’long and  100 for the Sprint duathlon in Douai (France).
In the sprint duathlon our master Wim, working towards the national and ETU (European) championships long distance takes the win in the masters race by becoming 5th (!) overall among some explosive youngsters!

The Long Distance duathlon…promissed fireworks. Maris (Pro World champion 2007) and Neyrinck (8th World championships Duathlon 2012 – Pro’s) definitely were the 2 athletes who were to beat today. Behind them, outsiders such as De Paula (Fr), Thesse (Fr), Billemons (Bel) and our Jan and Hans. Jan, last week winner in the Netherlands and Hans both are in shape. Ready to deal with the Douai-winds and putting down a good performance. For Jan this races leads towards the National and European Long distance championships. For Hans this race was an A-race, topping off his spring.

Further in the peloton a few of our other athletes had gotten the mission to race this tough duathlon in preparation towards their Irondistance coming up!

The first 12K went super well for our athletes, Jan and Hans and got into T1 almost together within 1’30 of the leaders, not losing too much energy and ready for a steady bikeride.

Jan en Hans 2nd run.jpg

Jan in his first 12K, running 3’30/km pace, Hans following shortly behind and both already in the game for a nice result!

loopparcours

The racecourse in Douai (Fr) is full of variation: Road, gravel, grass…all in it!

On the bike Hans immediately layed his card on the table, ‘La Machine’ (his nickname in the North of France) went hard immediately and was capable of taking the lead already after 25km! It wasn’t a possibility to wait and see. Every mile had to be focussed and hard to upgrade the advantage. It went so hard that other athletes had to take risks…going in overdrive, or losing terrain.
Unfortunately Neyrinck (Bel), already on 2’30 after lap1 crashed later in the race and broke his collarbone. The wind, roads and turnings make Douai a very demanding racecourse. We wish our friend a good recovery, and he’ll be back in shape for the World Champs later this year. Jan really feared this bikecourse, not his cup of tea…but he knows he needs to work on these kind of races to take advantage in his A-races. And it’s obvious his Italian training camp and the race in the Netherlands last week did well for him. Jan could manage to keep up with the top 10 and putting down the bike ‘relatively’ fresh!

Powerfile Hans.jpg

Hans only focused on his strengths during this race and builded up his race, he normalized a +300watt powerfile and it was enough to make a gap with former world champion Maris (Bel)…but was this gap big enough. Or does Hans can run?

The focus we give our athletes to kill it on the off-bike run, because yes…once again I will say ‘you don’t win a race on the bike, you always win it on the run…always’, seemed to pay off again! Hans was capable of keeping an advantage of Maris, definitely the better runner, who suffered a bit from the hip at the end of the race. Jan was closing down mile by mile on other athletes and was fighting himself towards 6th position!

In the end both Jan and Hans told me they suffered on the 2nd run, at that moment just after the race they didn’t know the runsplits yet. And if we look below, it’s clear why they suffered. The plans worked, races were build up well and they took 1st and 2nd runsplit overall ;-)!

HAns

Hans winning the race, after winning Belman, Chtriman, Half Iron Roeux, EC AG Duathlon he wins the biggest long distance duathlon in the north of France and Belgium.

Hans wins this beautifull race and puts another big race everyone would like to win on his resume!

Hans en Koen

Maris and Hans, 1st and 2nd in France! Maris being 2nd makes this win even better, our deepest respect for this champion.

People know I’m quite a maniac when it comes down to analyzing races, and knowing full results of races out of the head…(and maybe thinking the opposite of the common sense sometimes…but this might be making our >150wins/year)  well I want to share this thought: ” Hans  always, over and over again…is looked at as being an athlete winning or making his races on the bike” I TOTALLY disagree with this. I will not write too much about this, but everybody can count 1+1…so make the count of the top 10’s RUN1 + RUN2. Tell me…who are the 3 fastest runners of the race? T1 is part of the race, but there NEVER is a finishline at T1…Also tell me whose bikecourse affects it’s 2nd run the less in % to run 1 (min/km)? I know the results, it are FACTS.

Hans en Jan 2e run

That being said, duathlon is alive among Belgians…only not in Belgium 😉

Our cyclists today were racing a bit across the country and it’s Svenne again who takes his 5th podium of the season by getting 3rd at Les Bulles (Belgium).  Arne, on trainingcamp in ‘Les Vosges’ could top off his trainingcamp (5H bikeride yesterday) with a 23K Trailrun on Grand Ballon, and despite a full box of chocolates yesterday, he managed to get 3rd in the mountains! Future is assured, our athletes are alive.

In Germany Anthony raced in Frankfurt and could win the race around the Feldberg (11K climb), with a breakaway started on the Feldberg and a final attack in the downhill…Anthony could ride towards his 2nd victory of the season!! A great victory!

anth

Anthony wins the race by hitting the pedals on the Feldberg and its downhill, giving it all lead to victory in Germany!!

I would like to close with a proof of A. Einstein that one of my athletes posted on the internet last night: “All is relative to your own point of view, changing that point of view brings a big insight with it”.

A message maybe to not loose feet from the ground the moment you win or succeed towards your point of view, but keep the passion and spirit to train smart, and if possible to even perform better ;-)!

Ciao,  and be aware…tomorrow once again RACEDAY, and I feel it in my fingers some are keen on…!

Oh, and Jan and Hans…what are they training? Well, tomorrow they have a 200K bikeride planned…nothing comes easy 😉

Not just an ordinary weekend!

Not an ordinary weekend past weekend, a few races planned…and this resulted in much more than ever expected!

It was yesterdaymorning Jan went to Holland for the Duathlon in Ter Idzard! A race which is dominated by wind and wind. 10-40-5 distances, so a high intensity race, with no time to waste from the beginning. Jan had a good period behind him with 3rd place in Hoorn (Netherlands) and a trainingcamp in the Italian mountains where he stays in his appartment on high altitude. The perfect recipe towards this race it seemed, with a nice win as a result!

In the afternoon Svenne was ready to race hard in Mariembourg (UCI1.18), a bike course which fitted his TT-qualities well. The only difficulty of course is to get rid of the peloton…Svenne isn’t someone with a hard sprint at the end and needs to get rid of his concurrents earlier by making the race as hard as possible. This time it worked!

Svenne wins his first road race of the season after multiple top10results!

17952633_10208884330841790_662228816232645766_n

Tough racecourse and the first win of the season for Svenne in Mariembourg!

The weekend only had begun, because today our athletes were race-ready in Germany, Spain, Canada and Belgium!

David was the one to get up first, start in Orihuela (Spain-70.3 Triathlon) was early at 8.30 am!
At the Costa Blanca the athletes had to swim a one way 1.9K distance in choppy water.

Knowing the pro field was quite high-level with for example the current ITU world champion Sylvain Sudrie (France) at the starting line.

A good swim for David made him mount the bike within touch of the concurrents in his AG (30th AG). On the bike the racecours was quite difficult with 1300D+ for 90km. David unleashes his legs and is capable of riding full of energy towards T2. With a 275NP he moves up quite a lot and puts down the bike…2nd AG and 22nd (Pro included).

orihuela2

Quite a tough bike course in Orihuela (Spain), perfect to get rid of the ‘legal-drafters’, David puts the bike in T2 2nd in his AG.

Time to run now and David manages well, with a 4’15/km in the first half of his race and 4’28/km in the 2nd half of his race he paces quite regular. As this race is being the first of his season we might say we didn’t miss the start of it!

Results Orihueal

The top5 of the race was amazing, with current ITU world champion Sudrie on 4!

Till the last 2K David is in battle for the 3rd spot in his AG but the other concurrents played smart and could take him back just before the finishline…David thought they had 1lap behind… A good lesson to keep racing till the end, if u need to run multiple loops on the run course.

Well done, Spanish bull!

Tovar finish

David didn’t miss his start and ends up 6th in his AG – 40th overall!

In Germany (Göttingen) Anthony was ready to ride the first race of the season for his German team. With already quite some top10, a win and Arden Challenge in his legs we knew he was ready to race hard in Göttingen. Anthony tried several times to get rid of the other riders and ended up in the main group. The last kilometers towards the finisline this group stayed together and sprinted for victory. Anthony got 5th and once again comes close to victory!

Anthony.jpg

Anthony is in good shape these days, today again he gets 5th in Germany!

Our athletes weren’t only racing outside of Belgium. Also in Zaventem (Triathlon) and Spa (Offroad Triathlon) our athletes did well!

For Steven Spa meant his 3rd podium on 3 du/triathlons this season and astonishes himself! In the female race it’s Hannah who takes 2nd place, which must be a mental boost toward her first Ironman in August! On thursday she got some working points after her lactate test…and obviously she took this very well 😉

Later today our triathletes Tim and Allan both go succesfull in Zandvliet, Belgium (10miles) and Canada (8K) in runningraces! Allan currently is getting the one podium after the other…Tim is getting strong towards his first tri in Seneffe within 4weeks and wins the 10miles.

TIm

Tim averages 3’36/km in his 10miles and takes the win on this race with 50% offroad course.

This was not just a weekend, April is grand cru already…and isn’t done yet!

Ciao
Jesse

Guillaume grabs the win in Couvin – GP du Fond de l’eau, the resurrection of a cyclist on easter!

How can you celebrate easter by not eating too much chocolate?
Well, by winning a race…in Couvin (Belgium) GP du fond de l’eau UCI 1.18 was held today. A cyclingrace for climbers with a +10% climb each lap. Food for Svenne, food for Guillaume!
These types of races are difficult to approach, being in the front all the time and not letting get away strong riders…every breakaway can be the right one. So what was said to both riders was easy “Ride with an offensive mind and try to have a tiny bit left for the last 15K to give it your all”. Those words came out easy, but our cyclists played the game perfectly!

Guillaume takes his first win in years after avery offensive race in which he made the right breakaway and could manage to finish…solo!! Great victory of one of our young riders!
Svenne found himself in a difficult situation and tried to pull his cards out. After a good race he finishes 5th on a race course which pleased him a lot! Svenne is having a good leg – period and that’s seen by his colleagues of course.

guillaume

Guillaume with a 20″ gap on the chasing group behind him!

In Arden Challenge stage 4 Anthony still is among the better riders in the peloton. Tomorrow the last and maybe toughest stage is planned, let’s see if Anthony still has some fire left in his legs!

Mouscron is the yearly season opener of the French speaking Belgian triathlon league, Mouscron had some of our athletes at the starting line and they did well! Everybody could look back happy to this warming-up race!

Amato.jpg

Raphael opens 2017 with a 4th spot in Mouscron behind Baelde – Béthencourt and Dillies

In the front of the field it were Raphael and… Alex, who picked up a serious boost in his performance level past year and closed the gap with to best athletes.
Raphael had a difficult period in January, but despite that period, he could pick up a good level from then till today and finish 4th, Alex was the 2nd best swimmer in the pack and finished 8th! Our other athletes finished just a little further in this sprint triathlon with 260 participants.

Raph watts

In Mouscron our athletes got a nice bikecourse from the easterbunny, Raph pushed out a very consistent bike to finish off with a fast run!

Not only Mouscron was racelocation, Nico had the opportunity to challenge some world class athletes as Kienle, Raelert, Diemunsch,…in the Cannes triathlon (France). Nico had a 6′ faster swim than last year and moved up 130spots on the bike and run course which made him finish satisfied in his season-opener!

Uitslag Cannes

Maybe the best densified half triathlon in Europe during spring….triathlon Cannes (Fr) with a very high level of athletes racing it! Nico was part of it!

Yesterday it was in Holland the easter bunny came too early!

Hans rode a very good first Individual Time Trial of the season, finishing 3rd (same time as 2nd place) behind Dutch Grasman and German

Ironman South Africa: Our Ironman athletes getting out of hibernation with the hammer on the block!

The only difference with bears and other animals after hibernation is that our athletes don’t have regular caves…their training’caves’ are made to come out of winter in shape!

Today was the first big day of the season for our Ironmanathletes, goals were set and realistic. All 3athletes were keen on…getting a slot for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaï! The dream of many long distance athletes…simple? No! Not at all!

We were expecting a high level of athletes in this race, in the pro-field…but above all in the AG (non-pro) field. That meant our athletes had to be in shape, but not at all cost. I like to have a little bit of reserve into the prep towards an early IM. If one qualifies…ok, that’s an early good shot. If one doesn’t qualify…we take another chance later in the season! The athletes involved in this race are amateur athletes, with a big willing and day in – day out consistancy. A spirit of no-nonsense and taking care of the body with a close eye on practicing high level sports on a healthy way!

To give you a closer look on just 1 specific difficulty each athlete had to conquer oftenly, maybe you can find a difficulty of yourself in it:

  • Pierre: very irregular working schedule with long shifts and a 130K (1 direction) ride to his work
  • Cai: Often doesn’t know when work is done, as being an engaged doctor
  • Sam: Often has to start training at 8PM, finishing at 2am.

Just to show, that every athlete has his difficulties. Like everything…the way to approach the difficulties makes the man/woman in the end…today I can say they approached this as champions 😉

The swimcourse in SA is known as being quite difficult, you can see this at the times the pro athletes swimming times. Our athletes at the starting lines are not our ‘fastest’ swimmers. But that’s no issue at alle, a triathlon is about how fast you are beween start and finishline, the rest are only numbers 😉
It was Sam coming out of the water first (1h06), I remembered his 2015 AG win where he swam almost 2minutes longer. So I knew that was quite OK in order to get in front of his AG! Pierre also had a 3minutes faster swim than last year and Cai, who wanted to ‘feel free’ in the water and had a non-wetsuit swim was faster out of the water than her IM SA 2016.

On the bike Sam directly managed to move up, we planned a conservative pacing with only 260-270NP ;-), not having any high peaks and build up during the race! This worked very well, after the race we notice no other AG athlete could come close to the speed he produced (except for 1 athlete who rode 2′ slower but crashed a bit on the run).

Sam-Gyde-Zuid-AfrikaExceptional into this is the fact he had nobody of the same cyclinglevel  around him. With a 4h38 he moved up towards the top positions in his AG. But a fast run had to come out of the legs to get on the podium!

Sam Bike.jpg

Sam managed a consistent bikecourse, putting down the number 1 cycling split with 265NP!

Pierre was very annoyed only 12hours before the race…dead battery in his powermeter…ouch! Not the best moment for having this of course. So change of plans and pulse-pacing! No real problem, but if your mind is set on the powernumbers you need to make a mental ‘click’ in the head. He did! On the bikecourse Pierre moved up towards  32nd position in his AG before putting down the bike. Our cards were to play on the run….

Pierre HR bike.jpg

Pulses, not at all old school. On raceday definitely a good pacing strategy!

Cai, who came out of the water 10th had to move up on the bike, her strongest discipline.
She moved up towards 5th position at the end of the bikecourse and could start running where we expected her to be. The mission definitely was to run faster than she ever did in an IM!

On the run course we could immediately see the fast first 10km of Sam. What we know of the past is that…if Sam has a bad off-the-bike part that it’s mostly at the beginning of the run. He didn’t have that and we could already dream of another IM podium!

After 21km he averaged 4’08/km…that’s FAST! But in his 2nd part of the marathon there was hardly a slower pace to finish at…4’15/km, all of this after riding the fastest bikesplit…looking a bit further we see he also ran the fastest AG running split with this 2h58′ marathon! Really Amazing, once again (after Klagenfurt 2016) racing a sub9’er (8h51′) and taking his 5th FULL Ironman podium in exactly 2years!

Sam-Gyde-Zuid-Adfrika-run-2017

Sam Run

A well paced marathon of Sam, in which the engine kept ‘running’!

Sam (42years and getting better by age 😉 ) finished as 2nd overall AG athlete, and 22nd overall (Pro included) today. It was former Pro-athlete Godart (Lux) who takes the overall AG win and category win in this strongest (!) AG. We congratulate Olivier for this victory and whis all the best in Hawaï. Here’s the story of why Godart turned AG athlete again.

Overall.jpg

Great to see Sam is among the PRO-athletes, being a ’24’ years old AG athlete! He didn’t have a ‘pro-life’ leading up to this race and even did every single swim-bike-run in ‘ergo-style’!

Pierre was doing the impossible and very soon he appeared within the top15 of his AG. BUT it was very exciting, he was running super fast and passed halfway on a 3h10′ pace…the densification in this AG (for the Slots-position) was huge. But Pierre felt great and had wisely decided to not go faster in the first part and try keep this pace as long as possible…well he realised something none of our athletes managed before in an Ironman. He ran exactly the same pace in his first as 2nd part of the Ironman! Not 1 second of difference! After his 3h10′ marathon (12th overall AG running split) he got 7th!! More than enough for his Kona-ticket!

Pierre Constant Run

Amazing run of Pierre, keep calm…keep calm…STING!

That made our athletes already go to Hawaï with at least 2! 2out of 2…it seems ‘normal’ but I can not say this isn’t a relief for a motivated coach…now we can work ‘relaxed’ towards Hawaï 🙂

Beaufort

Pierre does it again, stronger than ever before with a 3h10′ marathon he qualifies for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaï!

And…then there was Cai, still in the battle for her AG-podium. She was tough on the marathon, was able to run her fastest marathon ever and finish within the TOP-5! Unfortenately the women’s Agegroups don’t have the same number of slots for Kona. Probably only the top2 will have the capability of going to the race in Hawaï! So Cai gave a present to herself and registered for her next Ironman at the beginning of July!

Well done!

Cairesult.jpg

5th place for Cai in her AG, cutting down her racing time by +/- 30minutes compared with 2016

I can’t be more proud as a coach than this…our athletes gave the best of themselves and nothing more was in it! Races went perfect and our athletes went into this race with ‘grinta’…lots of it!

Also in Holland we had 2 athletes racing the Hoorn-duathlon, Jan and Adrian had a pretty close combat on a fast race course. They went all the way and Jan got his first podium of the season, finishing 3rd overall! Adrian only a tiny bit further took 6th!

Uitslag Hoorn

Fast race course at Hoorn, something for the TT-specialists!

Surprising results in cycling and duathlon!

A weekend full of surprises!
With races in Germany, Holland and Belgium this weekend would be full of lactic acid…the national championships Xduathlon were marked in our agenda. Tony (Elite) and Wim (Masters) started with ambitions. Unfortenately for Tony the race lasted only 20m, tackled in the start he fell and done was his race. His concurrents of last week all ended within top 10…not fun, but more to come upcoming months!
Wim from his side came into T2 in the battle for the podium and win in the master’s race. New in this technical discipline het lost a lot of time in the more technical part of the race and had to let go the podium. Finishing with a splendid 2nd run he shows in road-season they will have to take count of him…let’s see.
In the same race Wesley finished his first national champs in a positive way!

In Eschweiler (Germany – Half Marathon), Dendermonde (Bel – 10K) and Cadzand (Holland – Half Marathon) our triathletes showed themselves to be ready for tri-season. In Germany Jens got 4th overall and is improving towards a steady – strong athlete. To be followed in 2017. In Cadzand our athletes got the honour to fight the wind, 5Beaufort in the face made them ‘work’ towards the finishline!

Our cyclists are having a great start of the season and Anthony today put the cherry on the first month of racing already by winning in Doornik/Tournai after another race in the front! With the last kilometer solo he could ‘enjoy’ this victory a lot.

Anthony

In The Netherlands, the national duathlonseries were held in Hilversum, Jan competes in one of these topseries-teams this season, and could help his team to 6th overall place despite a litte search to his shoes in T2 in which he lost quite some time.
Adrian surprises again…by not only doing a good race, but even finishing 2nd in the open

race in Hilversum! Another podium for Adrian who slowly but surely is becoming a collector of metal!

A good and honest weekend, with honest and satisfying results!
#trainsmartperformbetter.com

About being fast off the road and on the road…about honest and hard workers!

In times of social media in which some sportsmen sometimes look like world champions on their FB,twitter and other Flickr pages there are also sportsmen who simply work, train and perform as champions with the results on raceday… Something to think about maybe…Let’s call them the silent snipers…

This weekend was the first weekend our athletes actually had some bigger goals leading up to the season!

Our cyclocrossman Klaas had 2 tough weeks behind him, after a crash with his bike he suffered of his back. 2weeks of taking good care of it and alternatively working resulted in 7th place last weekend but this weekend…the race was in his own community. Motivation and training smart made him step up on the podium! Which of course started the weekend well!

klaas

I always liked those CX photos, those races are more than a battle against others and yourself…but also some bikewrestling is involved in it!

This morning early wake-up call for Tom in France, Liévin hosted a crossduathlon on the race course of the former world cup cyclocross over there. His 2nd B-race towards his first goal in March was not an easy one with a short night on raceday. After a good run off the bike he moved up towards 3rd position and his first 2017 podium! Peter a bit later got 16th in the tri race!

IMG-20170129-WA0000.jpg

Tom gets 3rd in France, in preparation for his trip to England where he will make his ‘Brentrance!’

In this time of the year we are quite happy with 2 athletes on the podium in 1 weekend…but your athletes don’t realize +/-200podia/year with only 2 podiums per weekend…so it were Els and Bart who showed not only  ‘offroad-specialists’ can win offroad!

It was Els who got first in the short offroadduathlon of Sint-Niklaas (Belgium), while Bart got 2nd in the masters race!

Some of our long distance triathletes were ready for their first real test of the year, the Louis Persoons Memorial. A half marathon on a hilly course. The midwinter goals were set and it ended up very well! After Hans his fast half marathon 2 weeks ago it were Jan, Jens, Adrian, Bart and Wim who did what they had to do!

With 4 of our athletes in the top 12 of the race, we can’t say we weren’t there…

Jan (1h15), Jens (1h17) and Adrian (1h20) finished within 1h20. Bart just outside of it and having a good test towards his Rotterdam marathon!

uitslag-genk

5athletes racing in Genk today, 4 within top 12 and fast they were! With Jens and Adrian 2youngsters are preparing a fast tri season! With Jan and Bart 2 experienced athletes showed they’re still there!

Meanwhile our cyclists have a few weeks left to enter their season, with tropical temperatures of +/- 15degrees ‘hotter’ than last week training runs smooth and ready…they will be!

ANthony.jpg

One of our cyclists dared to shorten his long ride 3’16″…but we’ll forgive him 🙂

Train smart, perform better,

Jesse

Recap 2016: September – October…Like A farmer starts plowing in winter to harvest in the end!

Like a farmer starts plowing in winter, sows in spring and harvests at the end of the summer our athletes realised the same if you look at the World Championships qualifications.

  • World Championships Duathlon, Switzerland (10-150-30): Jan
  • World Championships Ironman70.3, Australia: Raph – Sophie
  • World Championships Xterra, Maui Hawaii: Joeri
  • World Championships Ironman, Kona – Hawaii: Pierre-Heather-Sam

Being qualified for those races is already great to do, it’s a dream coming true for most athletes. But clearly everybody was seriously motivated to perform well in the world championships. In Australia Raph and Sophie had a great experience at the other side of the world and in this fast field of athletes they did what they were supposed to do!

raphasophie

Sophie and Raphael in the Ironman World Championships 70.3!

In Switzerland it was Jan who once more amazed by getting into the top 15 overall and becoming 1st AG!

JanME

Jan ‘Jantje’ Meysmans 4* AG world Champion Duathlon

In Hawaii, the best long distance triathletes of the world take part of the most magical race around. Pierre, Heather and Sam had a fantastic day and could show what they are made of! Sam had fantastic running off the bike and got himself on the podium becoming 3rd AG! In 2years Sam got 3Ironman AG wins and 1 3rd place at the World Championships! For Pierre this experience was what he needed, 2days after the race he already said he would like to come back. The whole island breaths triathlon. Heather got a blocked nerve only 2 weeks before the race, but right on time her body was released to perform!

2 weeks later, a bit further in Hawaii…in Maui it was Joeri who was ready for the XTERRA world championships! His first World championships, after a very nice season in races all over Europe it was his cherry on the pie with a 12th place in his AG at the end!

joeri

But harvesting doesn’t necessarily needs to be done in Championships!

Cai2

Cai winning her AG in Gerardmer XL, surrounded with fans!

With victories in ‘The Beast’  (Half irondistance, UK) , Regional championships triathlon in France, Triathlon Halifax (Canada) and several wins and podiumspots in  triathlon and cyclingraces in Canada, France,Germany ,Holland and Belgium this month was just great.

Our athletes racing in Ironman Barcelona and Mallorca all got their ticket to the finishline and delivered personal topperformances! The 5th overall spot of Adrian in Ironman70.3 Turkey signified that all is possible…if only you work for it!

September-October is also the period where u throw your road/TT bike on the attic and change it for the turbo or mountainbike!

The first cyclocrossraces were on and in Canada Andreas showed that a Swiss athlete is never to underestimate offroad. With a 3rd place in Xterra Woolastook (Can) he ended his triathlonseason like a boss!

andreasburger

3rd Overall at Xterra Woolastook for Andreas

We started in Australia…and we will end this recap in Australia, september-october was also the period in which the famous Crocodile Trophy, a mountainbike stage race in the Outback of Australia took place. Bjorn was ready for it, and after a crash in stage 1 he only kept growing in this race! With a 3rd, a 2nd and a 1st place in the stages he did better than expected and refound himself as a cyclist!

Bjorn working with his MTB towards a stage win!

And like a real farmer, now it’s time to work hard in silence!
